Financial stability 'will lead to recruitment boost'

Many small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are waiting until their financial outlook is clear before commuting to hiring more staff, a new survey has revealed.

A report carried out by Administaff as part of its Business Confidence Survey found that 61 per cent of small business owners, which may include packaging firms, will delay their expectation of an economic rebound until 2011 or later, while over 18 per cent feel a turnaround will happen in 2010 and 20 per cent are unsure.

Paul Sarvadi, Administaff's chairman and chief executive officer, said that many firms are seeing an improvement in their financial situation, however, and this will lead to more workers being hired in the coming months.

"Many owners of SMBs seem to be hesitant to commit important financial resources in the face of current economic uncertainty. However, they appear to be ready and willing to make those positive decisions as soon as key fiscal elements are in place," he explained.

It comes after Martin Warnes, managing director of reed.co.uk, said that hiring managers within the sector are becoming more active in anticipation of the industry experiencing a boost in demand and productivity in the coming months.
