Manufacturing sector 'should look to recruit in upturn'

Manufacturing industry bodies should ensure that the sector is attractive to graduates when the economy begins to improve, it has been claimed.

According to a spokesperson for the Institute of the Motor Industry, there is good career progression within the sector.

He continued: "As the economy starts to turnaround and pick up again, we want to make sure that young people are looking at the industry as a good career choice to go into."

The representative went on to say that while the current economic situation makes it difficult to promote the industry, companies need to make sure they prepare for the period after the downturn.

Earlier this month, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders' Vehicle Production Figuresindicated car production fell 58.7 per cent in January compared to the previous month, while commercial vehicle production declined by 59.9 per cent.

Over 850,000 people are employed by the motor industry, which has a manufacturing turnover of £51 billion, according to the group.
